Hi there,

Everyone’s got a story—the challenge is making yours heard.

For many L&D professionals, the real struggle lies in demonstrating your value in a way that resonates with stakeholders. What we see as meaningful progress can often be misinterpreted as unnecessary disruption or redundant processes. Sound familiar?

The reality is this: if your initiatives aren’t clearly tied to business objectives, your L&D team risks being seen as a cost center rather than a strategic driver. That’s why telling your story effectively is no longer optional—it’s critical.

As Neil John Cunningham, Founder and L&D Solutions Director at Align Learn Do explains, “at the end of the day…if you’re not helping to grow the business, there is going to be a big question mark above the L&D function.”

So, how do you bridge that gap and make the value of your work undeniable?

Neil developed the Numbers and Narratives model to help L&D people do just that, transforming the way you communicate your impact by marrying data with storytelling. Here’s how it works:

Recognize the commercial power of L&D: Tie learning results directly to financial metrics to show how your work supports the bottom line, and positions L&D as a strategic business partner.
Master the data storytelling approach: A compelling story resonates with stakeholders and clearly demonstrates ROI, securing executive buy-in and long-term support.
Follow the 5 steps to measure ROI: Use an iterative process to measure learner performance at scale, and to ensure you’re not just collecting data but using it to tell a story that matters.

Taking a data-driven storytelling approach helps you shift perceptions, win stakeholder trust, and showcase L&D as an essential driver of business success.

Use these best practices to leverage Numbers and Narratives
