Nutrition for a healthy gut

Did you know that your gut health plays a major role in your athletic performance? Research is increasingly finding a strong link between the gut microbiome (the trillions of good bacteria that live inside our digestive system) and several body and brain functions. For starters, a healthy gut microbiome improves:

☑️ Nutrient absorption for muscle growth and energy

☑️ Recovery times with reduced inflammation

☑️ Immune strength to keep you consistent

☑️ Mental resilience to reduce stress and help you push harder

For athletes who push their bodies to the max, a healthy gut is crucial for optimizing training results and staying healthy long term. But what foods do you need to power a healthy digestive system?

It’s important to consistently include foods or supplements with both probiotics and prebiotics to your diet to maintain a strong gut biome. Here’s a quick rundown:

Probiotics – The “good bacteria” found in foods like yogurt, kefir, kombucha, and kimchi.

Prebiotics – The “food” healthy bacteria eat that’s found in fiber-filled foods like bananas, oats, onions, and garlic.

Synbiotics – Combining probiotics + prebiotics. Example: Yogurt + banana + flaxseed – a perfect Freeletics snack!
