If You're Too Busy...

Oh how we love a good yap session, and reading your responses to our burning questions every week helps fill that never-ending void for us. 🤌 You had a lot to say over the past month, so we’ve curated a feedback smorgasbord for you: from managing loneliness at work, to giving your boss a holiday gift, to promoting your accomplishments online, our cup runneth over with your passionate responses. ☕️ Let’s dive in, shall we?

“There Is a Fine Line Between Self-Promotion and Bragging”

🫂 On feeling lonely at work

“As a manager, I try to check in with my team at least one to two times a day—walking around, seeing what's going on, asking about plans, etc. As the manager, no one is doing that for me so I've absolutely felt lonely at work (and I'm 13 years in). I'm always the one planning work events (#onlyfemalemanagerproblems) that I frankly couldn't care less about going to. My personal time is mine, I don't want to spend my evenings at a work event, but alas, in the spirit of #teambuilding it's off to high-tech mini golf for the holidays.”

“I work in fitness and feel the opposite of lonely! Teaching three to five classes a day is fun but I often fantasize about a desk job where I’m left alone for several hours a day. I recommend group fitness as a side gig to anyone wanting to have fun moving with a little sprinkle of extroversion.”

“My company does a fantastic job at recognizing birthdays, celebrating events in people's personal lives, and finding ways to bring people together in an authentic way, but the culture of the office is very quiet with not a ton of collaboration. Everyone is staring at their computer all day and rarely takes a break to eat lunch, chat, or get coffee with someone. I wish there was more room to do that together to foster more connection especially since we are only in the office two days a week.”

🎁 On giving your boss a holiday gift

“No, I do not plan on giving any gifts to my boss or colleagues. We are doing a small gift exchange at our holiday party and that is enough in my opinion. Giving gifts at work seems inappropriate unless you gift it to them outside of work and you are close friends.”

🤳 On self-promotion

“I don't think there is any shame in a little self-promotion, especially on platforms like LinkedIn. However, I'm always a little wary of oversharing my accomplishments or posting on a more personal platform like Instagram due to people assuming I'm ‘stuck up.’ I wouldn't want anyone to judge me for those personality traits based on too many self-promotion posts. Therefore, I think there is a fine line between self-promotion and bragging. I recently posted a self-promotion LinkedIn post and thought of how it would benefit me in the future if/when a future employer stalks my profile, they can see some of my accomplishments that may not be on my resume. Overall, read the room (a.k.a. your platform/followers), know the difference between self-promotion and bragging, and if at any point it starts to affect your mental well-being... just stop.”

“I love talking about myself to make connections in real life but doing it publicly on the internet sounds terrifying. I'm already hyper-critical of my own accomplishments, I don't need the mental toll that would come with strangers being critical of them as well.”

Blue Cypress & Snow 3-Wick Candle, NEST, $87

The Perfectly Pine Candle

“Oh the weather outside is frightful, but this candle is so delightful. For this holiday season, I’m ditching the tree (and the need to break out the vacuum every 0.3 seconds) and opting for this candle instead. With notes of cypress (think of her as pine’s cooler sister), juniper berry, and smoked vanilla bean, this candle instantly transports me to a cozy cabin or a chic, snow-covered retreat in the mountains. And with a burn time of 100 hours, I don’t get stingy about lighting this one too. Pass the matches!” — Jennifer, contributor

Meiomi Bright Lower Alcohol Pinot Noir, Total Wine, $20.99

The Wine Made for Weeknights

“I love a glass of wine after work, but I’m also a total lightweight when it comes to alcohol, so I’ve been on the hunt for a solid lower-alcohol wine. This lighter 8% alcohol version of Pinot Noir from Meiomi is officially my new go-to. 🍷 It tastes fruity and juicy but still has that richness I crave from a red. I poured a glass for my partner without telling him what it was, and his instant reaction was ‘Whoa, this is delicious!’’ I love that we can share a bottle over dinner on a weeknight and not wake up with a pounding headache the next morning. Plus, it’s just 90 calories per glass.” — Lara, contributor
