Talking Points

If You're Too Busy...

The silver lining to grey, dreary winter days? Awards season, of course! 🏆 Last weekend, the Golden Globes officially kicked off the most glitzy and glamorous season of all, and the many surprise wins and major snubs of the evening seriously whet our appetite for what’s to come. 👀

To help guide you through it all, we’re breaking down everything you need to know as the season revs up. TLDR: Your Sunday nights are booked and busy for the foreseeable future. 🔮

Note: We’d be remiss not to acknowledge the raging fires currently sweeping Los Angeles. It’s a devastating reminder that climate change is very real and that we need to take action now (and urge our political leaders to do the same). Some are even calling for the awards to be canceled in favor of making donations to victims of the fires and firefighters instead. Learn how you can help those affected here.

Everything You Need to Know for Awards Season

You think you know the big three? Let us introduce you anyways. 😘 Whether you’re betting in your office Grammys and Oscars pool or just want to know what you should watch and listen to before they win big, walk with us as we unpack all the drama and need-to-know insights this season.

🎶 The Grammys: Sunday, February 2

Before Hollywood steals the spotlight, the music industry’s best and brightest will come together to celebrate the achievements of the year, and oh, there were many. Need we remind you of Pop Girl Spring and Brat Summer? 🍏 Because of the sheer volume of seriously incredible music this year (can you believe this time last year mainstream radio didn’t know who Chappell Roan was, and “that’s that me espresso” wasn’t even part of our vocab?!), the awards show is sure to be more contentious than ever.

The biggest question of all is whether or not Beyoncé will finally win Album of the Year for her genre-defying country album Cowboy Carter(despite being the most-awarded artist, she’s never won Album of the Year—a major snub, if you ask us). That said, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft is giving Beyoncé some stiff competition and many are still betting on it to win—and the fact that they’re up against Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan goes to show just how strong this year was for women in music. 💪

🎞️ Screen Actors Guild Awards: Sunday, February 23

The SAG Awards are the least-watched broadcast of the bunch (sorry!), but that doesn’t mean they don’t have serious predictive power over who will win the Oscars. 🔮 They’re the only major awards ceremony dedicated solely to honoring actors in both film and television, and they’re voted on by the entire SAG-AFTRA membership, which includes a large and diverse range of actors. This is why they’re often seen as a major indicator of who could win the top acting prizes at the Oscars.

Case in point: in the past three years, all but one of the SAG acting winners have also won an Oscar (the only exception being Lily Gladstone, who won SAG's award for Best Female Actor last year for Killers of the Flower Moon, but the Oscar trophy went to Emma Stone for Poor Things). In short, if you’re looking to place any Oscars bets, let the SAG winners guide you. 🤑

🏆 The Oscars: Sunday, March 2

The big kahuna! We probably don’t need to fill you in on why the Oscars are important, but what you do need to know is that as it currently stands, Emilia Perez and The Brutalist are the top contenders for Best Picture after winning Best Motion Picture Awards at the Golden Globes in their respective categories. 🍿

Before we launch into our “Wicked was robbed!!!! 😭” speech, it’s worth noting that this kind of face-off is standard Oscars fare: often, emotional crowd-pleasers are pitted against austere epic films (think: Shakespeare in Love vs. Saving Private Ryan, The King’s Speech vs. The Social Network, Argo vs. Lincoln, and so on), and the academy loves rewarding these very specific types of movies.

The top acting prizes are still anyone’s game, but after Demi Moore’s iconic speech about aging in Hollywood at the Golden Globes, we’re putting our money on her. 👏

The Rom Com-Coded Sweater

“Anyone else love When Harry Met Sally? It’s one of my favorite flicks, and I often daydream about finding a partner as charming and stylish as Harry. Until then, I’ll be manifesting by wearing this sweater from Muji that looks like the iconic fisherman sweater he wore here. I love the oversized boxy ‘boyfriend’ fit of the knit, how it’s insulating without feeling suffocating, and not itchy like some wool sweaters out there! A winter wardrobe staple.” — Jennifer, contributor
