Insights for Industry Innovators

With generative AI adoption jumping 40% in the last year, the professional services industry has more AI tools, more automation, and more efficiency than ever before. The excitement continues to mount, and every vendor has an AI roadmap, every executive has an AI strategy, and every conference has at least three panels about agents.

Despite all the hype, revenue growth slowed to just 5.2% — roughly half the industry's historical benchmark. And, executive confidence in real-time visibility continued to decline, according to SPI.

The reason is straightforward: most firms are still operating in their Efficiency Era.

They're using AI to summarize meetings, generate content, automate workflows, and speed up execution. Useful? Absolutely. Transformational? Not so much.

The firms pulling ahead are entering something different: the Expertise Era.

This is where AI stops acting like an assistant and starts operating as a strategic partner — one that holds institutional memory, flags project risks before they hit margins, and makes sure every new engagement benefits from everything the business has already learned. Knowledge that used to walk out the door stays in the system.

Kantata CEO Michael Speranza clarifies this shift:

"Services organizations don't need more AI features layered on top of disconnected systems. They need a system that understands how their business works and can act on that understanding."

The next generation of winners won't be the firms with the most AI tools. They'll be the firms that turn expertise into a competitive system.
