Hey there,

DO what you say you are going to DO

A philosophy to live by...

These nine words are what I have thrown all of my energy into over the last many years…Have I failed at times? ABSOLUTELY. Have I always gotten back up? Yes. This is what I want to share with you all today... Integrity is what gives FEAR a run for its money, this idea that you stick to your word, no matter how hard it gets.

There have been many things I’ve wanted to do over the twenty plus years since I decided to get sober. I have chosen a different path to walk, a path of commitment, consistency, courage, knowing there are many things I am not great at, but willing to try my best to either get better or find people to help me along the way. I have come to the conclusion that thinking and manifesting in my mind or in a journal is very different than actually declaring out loud, to another person or group of people, something I am going to commit to doing.

Here is my process - I begin developing an idea, a dream or a goal internally and attempt to work it out on paper in order to get the idea/dream/goal to a place where I think it may be possible is the first step. Once I’ve gotten there, could take months, and still have enough passion to pursue it no matter how hard it may seem...then, and only then, do I tell someone I am going to do it. And once I let those words escape my mouth out loud, I make it my job to DO it. This could be with anything: business, a fitness challenge, a nutrition plan, sobriety, family projects. The key here is understanding the difference between ideating and saying to someone what you are going to do. That is why I always recommend not telling people what you are going to do until you are sure that you are ready to do it or give it all you’ve got in trying.

Why is this so important? Because breaking commitments we make to ourselves and others is the fastest way to lose self confidence. We begin to lose faith in ourselves and this can easily become a slippery slope, a pathological cycle of lies. And when we are in it, we don’t think about it that way in many cases, we are typically going in with the best of intentions, but over the years I have developed the self awareness to know when to share with others what I have been planning internally, or when to keep kicking the tires myself internally.

It is the end of the first month of the year, if you have made commitments to yourself and others that you are going to start something, this is your reminder to not let off the gas, even if it feels impossible after just 30 days of trying. Don’t become the person who says they are going to do something and quits when the challenge gets tough and the change feels too overwhelming. I am not sure if you are the person that needed to read this today, but if you are, just know that you have what it takes to follow through. And if you are not the person that needed to read this today, please share this entry with someone you know who could use a little kick in the ass.

DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO...some of the best advise I was given long ago.

Love ya,
