In the relentless pursuit of faster and more potent computing capabilities, scientists and engineers have embarked on an intriguing journey into the realm of quantum mechanics. Quantum computing, a revolutionary technology founded on the principles of quantum mechanics, holds the promise of transforming diverse fields, including materials science, drug discovery, finance, and artificial intelligence. Among the diverse approaches within this burgeoning field, photonic quantum...

Quantum Dots

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals that have optical and electrical properties. Quantum dots emit different light colors when we expose them to UV light. These tiny crystals have various applications in medicine, photovoltaics, displays, solar cells, etc.The color of the emitted light depends on the size of the quantum dots. When we illuminate quantum dots with UV light, an electron present in a quantum dot gets excited. After some time, deexcitation takes place, and...

Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing: Navigating the Delicate Dance of Information

Quantum computing has captivated the minds of scientists and technologists alike, promising to solve problems intractable for even the mightiest classical machines. However, this potential comes with a caveat: the fragility of quantum information. Unlike their binary counterparts, qubits, the building blocks of quantum computers, are susceptible to errors arising from environmental interactions and hardware imperfections. These errors, if left unchecked, can quickly accumulate...

Overlap-ADAPT-VQE: Practical Quantum Chemistry on Quantum Computers via Overlap-Guided Compact Ansätze

ADAPT-VQE is a robust algorithm for hybrid quantum-classical simulations of quantum chemical systems on near-term quantum computers. While its iterative process systematically reaches the ground state energy, ADAPT-VQE is sensitive to local energy minima, leading to over-parameterized ansätze. We introduce the Overlap-ADAPT-VQE to grow wave-functions by maximizing their overlap with any intermediate target wave-function that already captures some electronic correlation. By...

QCEDA: Using Quantum Computers for EDA

The field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) is crucial for microelectronics, but the increasing complexity of Integrated Circuits (ICs) poses challenges for conventional EDA: Corresponding problems are often NP-hard and are therefore in general solved by heuristics, not guaranteeing optimal solutions. Quantum computers may offer better solutions due to their potential for optimization through entanglement, superposition, and interference. Most of the works in the area of EDA...

Equivalence Checking of Quantum Circuits with the ZX-Calculus

As state-of-the-art quantum computers are capable of running increasingly complex algorithms, the need for automated methods to design and test potential applications rises. Equivalence checking of quantum circuits is an important, yet hardly automated, task in the development of the quantum software stack. Recently, new methods have been proposed that tackle this problem from widely different perspectives. One of them is based on the ZX-calculus, a graphical rewriting system for...

Princeton Scientists Discover Exotic Quantum Interference Effect in a Topological Insulator Device

In a novel experiment, physicists have observed long-range quantum coherence effects due to Aharonov-Bohm interference in a topological insulator-based device. This finding opens up a new realm of possibilities for the future development of topological quantum physics and engineering. This finding could also affect the development of spin-based electronics, which may potentially replace some current electronic systems for higher energy efficiency and may provide new platforms to...

A new building block for error-corrected quantum computers

Quantum computers, which operate based on the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics first observed at the atomic-scale, are an emerging technology believed to be capable of computational tasks out of the reach of classical digital computers. Potential applications of quantum computers range from physical simulation – like calculating electronic energies of complex molecules – to cryptography – such as cracking RSA encryption [1]. Despite their revolutionary potential, quantum...
