5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

Ten years ago, almost to the day, I sent an email with the subject line “5-Bullet Friday - A Test.”

Thank you for allowing me to do this work, and a deep bow to some of you for being part of this for a decade! 🙏

What I’m listening to

“Colors” by Black Pumas (@blackpumas). I could not think of a better song to kick off the weekend. It’s a beauty on so many levels. Lyrics, vocals, instrumentals… it’s got it all.

Small fitness tool I’m loving

Tune Up Fitness – Alpha Ball. This was recommended to me by Nsima Inyang, a mutant among mutants.

The Alpha Ball solves a few different problems at the same time:

- It’s precise. Foam rollers are big amorphous objects. It can be hard to get them to certain spots, which the Alpha Ball can easily access.

- It’s compact enough for luggage and travel. This also means I can use it against a wall for spinal erectors, TFL, etc.

- It has a Goldilocks density: not too hard and not too soft. The firmness hits the sweet spot—hard enough to work out deep knots but not so aggressive that it causes excessive pain or bracing.

Short video that I’ve watched a few times

Anthony De Mello “Awareness” video. I found this clip on the Tim Ferriss subreddit. As I commented on the post, it is hard to believe, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen video of De Mello. Long overdue, since I’ve read Awareness at least a dozen times.

What I’m reading

“Origami is revolutionizing technology, from medicine to space” by Maya Wei-Haas. (Alternate link.) From the sub-headine: “The centuries-old art of folding paper is yielding new applications in spacecraft, architecture, and even the human body.”

A few excerpts to whet your appetite:

Despite origami’s current popularity in science and technology, researchers’ early folding forays met resistance. Hull still remembers a discussion he had in 1997 with a program officer from the National Science Foundation (NSF), a U.S. government agency that supports research and education. Hull was outlining a potential project, when the program officer cut him off to say that the NSF would never fund “a research proposal with origami in the title.”

…

Origami holds particular promise for biomedicine. For instance, a team led by Daniela Rus, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, developed a robot that can fold to fit into a pill capsule. After the capsule is ingested, the bot unfolds and can be directed around the digestive system using programmable magnetic fields. An initial test demonstrated one possible use: removing swallowed button batteries from the stomach, a potentially deadly condition experienced by thousands of children each year. “Imagine embedding medicine or using it to patch a wound,” Rus says. “Just imagine a future of surgeries with no incisions, no pain, and no risk of infection.”

Book highlight I’m pondering

“Now keep looking at this unpleasant situation or person until you realize that it isn’t they that are causing the negative emotions. They are just going their way, being themselves, doing their thing whether right or wrong, good or bad. It is your computer that, thanks to your programming, insists on your reacting with negative emotions. You will see this better if you realize that someone with a different programming when faced with this same situation or person or event would react quite calmly, even happily. Don’t stop till you have grasped this truth: The only reason why you too are not reacting calmly and happily is your computer that is stubbornly insisting that reality be reshaped to conform to its programming. Observe all of this from the outside so to speak and see the marvelous change that comes about in you.”

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with a special episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, in which my friend Dr. Peter Attia takes the role of the host and interviews the greatest energy trader of all time, John Arnold.

And, as always, please give me feedback on X. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim
