5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you.

This edition is brought to you by Eight Sleep. Be sure to see the offer in the P.S.

Song I’m listening to

“The Fire” (YouTube, Apple Music, Spotify) by Celine Cairo (@celinecairo).

What I’m reading

“Steve Young, girls flag football, and finding the next calling” by Dan Pompei for The Athletic. Try this link if you are having any trouble accessing the above.

Japanese expression I’m enjoying

反面教師 (hanmen kyoushi). Some languages have elegant ways of capturing things that require a sentence in English. Saudade in Portuguese is close to this. Komorebi in Japanese certainly checks the box. Now I can add hanmen kyoushi to my ever-growing list.

“反面教師 (はんめんきょうし, hanmen kyoushi, 反面教员 in Chinese) is a Chinese/Japanese idiom that means ‘an example of bad people/things that you should not follow/imitate.’” (Source)

Think of it as “opposite teacher.” Deep bow to Kristy for putting this on my radar.

Photographer I’m studying

Fan Ho (@fanhophotography). See some of his work here: Fan Ho Photography. From Wikipedia: “Fan Ho was a Chinese photographer, film director, and actor. From 1956, he won over 280 awards from international exhibitions and competitions worldwide for his photography.”

Quotes I’m pondering

“In truth, O judges, while I wish to be adorned with every virtue, yet there is nothing which I can esteem more highly than being and appearing grateful. For this one virtue is not only the greatest, but is also the parent of all the other virtues.”
— Cicero

“Without courage we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”
— Maya Angelou

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with this Random Show episode recorded in rural Japan, this special super combo podcast episode featuring Jamie Foxx and Maria Popova, and my interview with fine-art photographer David Yarrow.

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Eight Sleep Pod Cover.

Good sleep is one of the keys to unlocking your maximum potential. More than 30% of Americans struggle with sleep, and I’m a member of that sad group. Temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep, and heat is my personal nemesis. I’ve suffered for decades, tossing and turning, throwing blankets off, pulling them back on, and repeating ad nauseam. But a few years ago, I started using the Pod Cover, and it has transformed my sleep. The Pod Cover by Eight Sleep fits on any bed like a fitted sheet and improves your sleep with cooling technology that automatically adjusts the temperature on each side of the bed, based on your and your partner’s individual needs. It can cool down to as low as 55°F or warm up to 110°F, monitoring and responding to your sleep phases and environment for your best night of sleep ever.

With this year coming to an end, there’s no better way to get a jumpstart on your “improve my sleep” New Year’s resolution than with Eight Sleep. And now, subscribers to 5-Bullet Friday can get $250 off of the Pod 3 Cover for a limited time! Click here to claim this deal and unlock your full potential through optimal sleep.
