5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you.

This edition is brought to you by Momentous. Be sure to see their offer in the P.S.

New blog post I’m very excited about

“No Biological Free Lunches.” It’s alarming how many folks now treat “T” or “TRT” (testosterone replacement therapy) as something akin to taking a multivitamin, when they never would have considered taking androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) a few years earlier. Like Patagonian toothfish has become Chilean sea bass on fashionable menus worldwide, it’s quite the rebrand story, but that doesn’t change the underlying biology, which is nuanced. I explore this, performance-enhancing drugs in general, and much more in my brand-new blog post here. Included are some personal experiences with anabolics, which I don’t regret, and I highlight the importance of framing trade-offs and risks correctly, including seven guidelines I regularly use. There are recommended resources as well.

Please — If you’d like me to write blog posts, leave a comment on this blog post. Writing is a lot harder than podcasting, so I need to know that you want more if I’m going to justify the significant time investment.

Song I’m looping as we slide into the weekend

“Vivrant Thing” (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube) by Q-Tip.

Profile I’m reading

“Overlooked No More: Beatrix Potter, Author of ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’” via JZ, Dr. Jeffrey Zurofsky from The 4-Hour Chef. From the article:

With “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” Beatrix Potter created what would become one of the world’s best-known children’s book characters.

The book, about a cheeky rabbit who steals vegetables from the garden of one Mr. McGregor and loses his coat and shoes in a narrow escape, became a literary juggernaut that has sold more than 45 million copies. It also spawned a merchandising empire and has left an indelible imprint on children’s book publishing.

But Potter’s manuscript was initially dismissed by publishers...

Podcast episode I’m listening to

“Psychedelics with Joe Green” (Apple Podcasts, Spotify) on the On with Kara Swisher podcast. I skip most podcasts about psychedelics, but Joe and Kara both did an outstanding job in this conversation, with hard questions and answers that cover specifics. You’ll learn many stats and facts I’d never heard assembled in one place. This is a great “where we are and where we are going” overview of the ecosystem, especially as related to Oregon, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy as the tip of the spear, and reclassification as only one piece of the fascinating puzzle. For those interested in exploring the Psychedelic Science Funders Collaborative further, take a look here.

Quote I’m pondering

“Most people end up being conformists; they adapt to prison life. A few become reformers; they fight for better lighting, better ventilation. Hardly anyone becomes a rebel, a revolutionary who breaks down the prison walls. You can only be a revolutionary when you see the prison walls in the first place.”

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with the latest The Tim Ferriss Experiment episode on the art of parkour; my most recent interview with Dr. Peter Attia on the science and art of longevity; and my conversation with coach Jerry Colonna on how to reboot yourself and feel unrushed in the new year.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Momentous high-quality supplements!

Momentous offers high-quality supplements and products across a broad spectrum of categories, and I’ve been testing their products for months now. Lately, I’ve been using their Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate Powder (chocolate is my favorite flavor) daily, as I’m getting more serious about training. Protein is a critical building block of the human body, and ample amounts are key to recovery. I literally just finished skiing, and the first thing I did was get my 20–30 grams of protein with Momentous. If you want your body to operate at its best, it needs the right fuel, and Momentous Whey is my go-to post-workout protein. Their whey is sourced from EU dairy farmers who adhere to strict regulations, and it comes from grass-fed cows free of hormones, steroids, and rBST. Plus, Momentous products are third-party tested (Informed Sport and/or NSF-certified), so you can trust that what is on the label is in the bottle… and nothing else.
