5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you.

This edition is brought to you by Eight Sleep. Be sure to see their offer in the P.S.

What I’m wearing

Glerups. Many of you asked about the shoes I’m wearing in this photo. In the colder months, I wear Glerups indoors effectively 100% of the time. I love them.

What I’m listening to

“Burn” (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music) by Ellie Goulding. This has become one of my go-to feel-good tracks. It’s perfect for first thing in the morning or at 5 p.m. after too many video calls have chewed on your soul.

Summer destinations I’m considering

“The 24 Best Places to Go in 2024” If you have any clear favorites, please let me know on Twitter @tferriss! I’ll start referring to it as “X” in 2030.

What I’m reading

String Theory: David Foster Wallace on Tennis. “Federer Both Flesh and Not” is considered one of Wallace’s best essays, and it doesn’t disappoint. I’m not a tennis player, and that didn’t affect my enjoyment of this writing one iota. The essay was first published in The New York Times as “Federer as Religious Experience” in 2006.

Here are two excerpts to give you a taste:

There are three kinds of valid explanation for Federer’s ascendancy. One kind involves mystery and metaphysics and is, I think, closest to the real truth. The others are more technical and make for better journalism.

The metaphysical explanation is that Roger Federer is one of those rare, preternatural athletes who appear to be exempt, at least in part, from certain physical laws. Good analogs here include Michael Jordan, who could not only jump inhumanly high but actually hang there a beat or two longer than gravity allows, and Muhammad Ali, who really could “float” across the canvas and land two or three jabs in the clock-time required for one. There are probably a half-dozen other examples since 1960. And Roger Federer is of this type—a type that one could call genius, or mutant, or avatar.

[...]

In 2006, though, it’s fair to ask why this kind of talent still matters so much. Recall what is true about dogma and Wimbledon’s sign. Kinesthetic virtuoso or no, Roger Federer is now dominating the largest, strongest, fittest, best-trained and -coached field of male pros who’ve ever existed, with everyone using a kind of nuclear racket that’s said to have made the finer calibrations of kinesthetic sense irrelevant, like trying to whistle Mozart during a Metallica concert.

Thanks to David Perell for the recommendation! He mentioned this after our interview in his studio.

Poem I’m pondering, bolding mine

behind the pain
someone is rejoicing

behind the torture
there is love

who’s going to buy
this bullshit

if you don’t become the ocean
you’ll be seasick
every day

— Leonard Cohen, “Good Advice For Someone Like Me”
(Click here to share on Twitter.)

How do you interpret the bolded part? Here’s one friend’s take: “If you expand and become a large enough container, the little ripples that are so easy to complain about—that affect you—won’t bother you anymore. Just ripples in the ocean.”

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my recent interview with Deep Work author Cal Newport, the latest episode (“How to Start a Business”) from The Tim Ferriss Experiment, and my conversation with the co-founder of string field theory Michio Kaku.

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Eight Sleep Pod Cover.

Good sleep is one of the keys to unlocking your maximum potential. More than 30% of Americans struggle with sleep, and I’m a member of that sad group. Temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep, and heat is my personal nemesis. But a few years ago, I started using the Pod Cover, and it has transformed my sleep. The Pod Cover by Eight Sleep fits on any bed like a fitted sheet and improves your sleep with cooling technology that automatically adjusts the temperature on each side of the bed, based on your and your partner’s individual needs.
