5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you.

This edition is brought to you by Waking Up, one of my favorite life tools. Be sure to see their offer in the P.S.

Short movie I’m watching

An Irish Goodbye (Vimeo, YouTube, HBO Max). This is one of the funniest and most poignant short films I’ve ever seen. I found this BAFTA and Academy Award winner via ChatGPT. Here is the official description: “On a farm in rural Northern Ireland, estranged brothers Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) and Lorcan (James Martin) are forced to reunite following the untimely death of their mother (Michelle Fairley). But when the pair discover an unfulfilled bucket list belonging to their late mum, their pained reunion takes an altogether different course.” At the very least, watch the trailer. It’s not as heavy as it sounds, but it does pack a lot of greatness into roughly 20 minutes.

Questions I’m exploring

“Extreme brainstorming questions to trigger new, better ideas” by Jason Cohen. “The following prompts jostle you out of tiny thinking. Each stretches some dimension of reality to an extreme. So extreme that it is nearly nonsense.”

Kettle I’m using

Corvo EKG Electric Kettle from Fellow. I’ve tried a lot of electric kettles for tea and coffee over the decades, and this is my favorite. From the description: “The electric kettle that does it all, precision engineered to meet all your hot water needs. Exact temperature control, 1200 watts for a quick heat time, and a world of features for ultimate control.” Big thanks to Blake from LMNT for the gift!

From NYT’s Wirecutter: “If you like a modern aesthetic, and you don’t mind paying more for smaller capacity: The Fellow Corvo EKG Electric Kettle is attractive, and it performed very well, but it’s incredibly small. Due to its 0.9-liter capacity, you’re hardly getting two full cups of tea. The variable-temperature control was very accurate, the settings were intuitive, and the base was nice. … If you’re regularly making single servings, and you’re drawn to the Corvo’s good looks, you likely won’t be disappointed in its performance.”

Book I’m reading

Wine & Prayer: Eighty Ghazals from the Divan of Hafiz. Hat tip to Professor Omid Safi (@ostadjaan) for the recommendation. From the description: “Wine & Prayer is a new edition of Elizabeth Gray’s 1995 work The Green Sea of Heaven. In this new volume, Gray has joined with Iraj Anvar, a scholar of Sufism and Persian poetry, expanding the book from fifty to eighty translations of Hafiz’s brilliant ghazals. This work brings to each reader Hafiz’s poetic genius, expressing his passion for the Divine Beloved and his scandalous (to the Muslim clergy of his day) exaltation of music and wine as vehicles of transcendence and ecstasy. Wine & Prayer presents the ghazals of Hafiz in English translations that capture the subtleties, paradoxes, and spiritual depths of the poet hailed by Persians as ‘the Tongue of the Invisible’ and the ‘Interpreter of Mysteries.’”

Quote I’m pondering

“Who can say if the thoughts you have in your mind as you read these words are the same thoughts I had in my mind as I typed them? We are different, you and I, and the qualia of our consciousnesses are as divergent as two stars at the ends of the universe.

And yet, whatever has been lost in translation in the long journey of my thoughts through the maze of civilization to your mind, I think you do understand me, and you think you do understand me. Our minds managed to touch, if but briefly and imperfectly.

Does the thought not make the universe seem just a bit kinder, a bit brighter, a bit warmer and more human?

We live for such miracles.”

— Ken Liu, “The Paper Menagerie,” the first work of fiction to sweep the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards. Deep bow to repeat podcast guest Matt Mullenweg for gifting me Ken’s book years ago.

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with episodes #2 and #3 (Rally Racing and Language Learning) from my TV series The Tim Ferriss Experiment (think MythBusters meets Jason Bourne and get ready for a wild ride) and “17 Questions That Changed My Life.”

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all! Don’t miss the P.S. below…

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Waking Up meditation app.

The Waking Up app, created by my good friend, renowned neuroscientist and author Sam Harris, is an absolutely world-class program for mind training. I was a beta tester back in 2018 and have recommended it to nearly all of my friends. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or experience more peace of mind, the Waking Up app can help, and it’s helped me. I have used it for more than five years, and it’s like adding a buffer of calm between me and our fast-paced, often high-stress, world.

I love Waking Up for its guided meditation *progression* that builds multiple skills as you move from one class to the next. I suggest starting with Sam’s 30-day introductory class, which I’ve revisited myself at least once a year. It’s a logical sequence instead of a collection of ad-hoc readings.
